Archos 5 Android Internet Tablet hands-on [Video]

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009
SlashGear stopped by the Archos launch event last night for the company’s new Android-powered Internet Tablet, the Archos 5.  The idea is straightforward: all of Archos’ usual media-centric abilities are there, including broad codec support and the ability to play local and network-based content, but rather than their home-grown Linux-based OS the French company has turned to Android and a custom UI shell. Hands-on video and gallery after the cut Stand-out specifications include WiFi b/g/n, Bluetooth (with straightforward pairing to your cellphone, for mobile internet access), a 4.8-inch 800 x 480 touchscreen (using a resistive, not capacitive, panel) and an 800MHz OPAP3440 processor.  In use, the touchscreen ...

Palm Pixi powered by WebOS [Hands-on]

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009
Rumors of Palm releasing a candybar phone with front-facing QWERTY keyboard have been around since the launch of the Palm Pre.  Well, as of tonight the Pixi is no longer a rumor.  Similar to the Palm Pre, Pixi is powered by WebOS and has a multi-touch capacitive display, 8GB of internal user storage memory, the same removable 1150 mAh battery and proximity sensor, among other things.  However it squeezes all of that into an incredibly compact casing: just 111 x 55 x 10.85 mm, thinner than an iPhone 3GS. Unlike the Pre, the Pixi’s display size is 2.63-inches, and it has a 2MP fixed-focused camera with LED flash; there’s also no WiFi, so ...

Nokia E52 and E55 Review

Friday, August 28th, 2009
Nokia World is just around the corner, and the tech world is already gaping at some of the company’s more unusual devices.  SlashGear, though, have already been living with some of the Finnish company’s more mainstream handsets, those which will probably sell far more than flagships like the N900, in the shape of the Eseries E52 and E55.  Differentiated primarily by an unusual, half-QWERTY keyboard on the E55, they both promise lengthy battery life and smartphone strengths in a compact form-factor.  Check out our full review after the cut. Specifications of the two are roughly identical, bar their keypads. Each has a 2.4-inch 240 x 320 QVGA ...

Sprint 4G WiMAX reaches Las Vegas, Portland and Atlanta

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009
Sprint’s gradual roll-out of 4G WiMAX across the US continues, with the latest three areas to receive a “hotspot the size of a city” being Las Vegas, Portland and Atlanta.  Of course, that might come as a surprise to residents of those three cities, who might have been using WiMAX under the Clearwire CLEAR banner for several months now. In fact, Sprint are reselling the WiMAX network, and the three areas are simply the next to which it has extended its 4G promotion.  Those with an existing 3G/4G device can use the 4G network for $10 per 24hrs, or alternatively pick up a $69.99 consumer plan with unlimited 4G ...

Zune HD preorders taken: arrives September 15th

Thursday, August 13th, 2009
Microsoft have officially announced the Zune HD for pre-orders, with the OLED touchscreen PMP set to land in pockets on September 15th.  Given the numerous leaks over the past few days, it comes as no great surprise to hear that the Zune HD is priced at $219.99 for the 16GB model and $289.99 for the 32GB model.  Your money gets you a 3.3-inch 16:9 480 x 272 display, NVIDIA Tegra chipset and – via an optional dock – 720p output for your HDTV. There’s also WiFi, an integrated HD Radio and a new internet browser with multitouch and an on-screen keyboard.  Pre-order buyers can only choose between the black ...
